Working in the Nursery

Shawn and I celebrated Labor Day by laboring away in the nursery.

We had already purchased a crib and picked it up, now all we had to do was assemble it. It went together pretty easily, except for one minor snag. We thought that we were missing one of the small, oddly-shaped screws that came with the crib, so I called the manufacturer to see if we could have a new piece shipped to us. Unfortunately, both numbers in the instruction manual were disconnected. Luckily Shawn found the missing screw hiding inside another piece, but I don’t know what we would have done if that hadn’t happened. We'd probably still have a pile of pieces sitting on the floor!

In any case, the crib turned out pretty nice…

It also has a drawer underneath for storage. As you can see, I’ve already started using it…

Next, we hung the wallpaper border. The pattern is from the Alphabet Soup collection by CoCaLo. In a fit of industriousness, I was able to apply the wallpaper with reasonably good results. Here’s me admiring my handiwork in a difficult corner…

Our final task was to paint the door to the storage area. It’s nice to have the extra storage, but the door was taking up valuable wall space and didn’t blend with the room at all, so we decided to make it into a magnetic chalkboard. Here’s Shawn putting on the first coat of paint…

Several coats of magnetic primer and black chalkboard paint later, we had our door. Though it still needs a border of wood casing around it and some alphabet magnets to make it complete, I think it turned out great. I also added a knob, which I painted to match the wall color...

I also painted the knobs on the closet door to give them a little more personality…

All in all, the room is pretty much done. Now we just need to pick up some of the other essentials (like a mattress, bedding, a dresser, a changing station, etc. Yikes that’s a lot!) and we’ll be all set!

I like the border you picked! I always go online and check out all of the new baby designs. So cute! I didn't know there was magnetic paint! What a great idea--and it turned out awesome!
