Sunday in Catawba

This weekend, Shawn and I ventured west to Ohio’s Vacationland – the Port Clinton and Marblehead area, which is located right next to Sandusky.

Our sister-in-law, Melissa’s, parents own a small home near Gem Beach on Catawba Island.* She and Don will often spend the weekend there with their three daughters and really enjoy it.

We got to see their house, which was the perfect size for a vacation home and really well done inside. They live in a marina community, so we were able to cruise around in a golf cart to check out the area. They have a great dock, several restaurants, a store, and a beautiful beach area with a swimming pool and playground. The property is also conveniently located near several wineries, farmer’s markets, and other fun attractions like water parks and miniature golf (there’s also an African Safari, which features buffalo. Hmmm… I didn’t know that buffalo were native to Africa.). You can also take the ferry over to the Lake Erie Islands, which includes South Bass (where Put-in-Bay is located), Middle Bass, Kelley’s Island, and others.

We had a nice day seeing all the sites (even though it was a little deserted since the sky was overcast and the tourist season is nearly over). Shawn and I even started to think it would be fun to have our own little place up there! Maybe we could get a little house near the beach and a boat (I absolutely love the water!). It would be fun to spend time with family and also have a place to relax on the weekends. Sounds like a good goal – so we'll see!

* Here’s a fun fact, Catawba Island is not actually an island – its a peninsula. Though as Don so eloquently put it, “it feels like an island.”
