Alice in Wonderland

So, here is how our final Halloween costumes turned out. The first one is Elizabeth as Alice. Hers was pretty simple. I ordered it online and then just added a black bow, white tights, and black shoes. Very cute…

Shawn was the Mad Hatter. His costume was completely thrifted (except for the hat, which I purchased for $3 at a Halloween store). I found the yellow blazer and green pants at the Salvation Army (the weird part is someone actually wore those once). Underneath is a white dress shirt with the collar turned up and a purplish vest which is possibly my favorite part of the outfit. I made the bow out of ribbon I got from a craft store and trimmed the hat it as well. I made the sign for the hat out of cardboard and lettered it myself. All in all, a very simple outfit to make. It just took some time to find the right clothes to achieve the “mad” look…

Then, there’s me. I was the Queen of Hearts. I was initially nervous that I wouldn’t be able to find anything to work, but I ran across this red dress (which appears to be a former bridesmaid dress) and knew it would work perfectly. I added a black velvet jacket with a heart pin to keep it closed (I also glued little red, heart-shaped gems to the sleeves). Then I got a black velvet shirt and cut hearts out of it and glued them to the dress to give it a little character. The earrings were handmade by my very good friend, Lisa, and I used a piece of velvet and a heart-shaped charm I got from a craft store for the necklace. I had a whole bunch of other ideas, but didn’t end up doing them because I was afraid of ruining the dress by doing too much to it…

The crown was made of poster board and inspired by the crown Helena Bonham Carter wears in Alice in Wonderland (which will be out in March 2010). I cut out the shape I wanted and used a hot glue gun to outline it and create hearts. Then I painted the crown with two coats of gold fabric paint (which seemed to help the points flop over). Then I glued on the red, heart-shaped gems and fastened it to my hair with bobby pins…

Here are a couple more pictures of us (sadly I didn’t get one of all three of us together)…

Elizabeth looks a little leery of the Queen…

Some other adorable shots of Lizzie…

And here she is with Austin on Halloween night, all bundled up and ready for candy!
