Diapering and Such

Because we are concerned about the environmental impact of disposable diapers and would also like to save some money, Shawn and I are interested in using cloth diapers for a future child. I’ve been doing some research online, but this stuff is not easy to figure out. For starters, almost no one uses cloth anymore, so most stores don’t carry the products. The majority of supplies will have to be purchased sight unseen via the Internet. In addition, I’ve never actually changed a cloth diaper, so the first time I do so will be an adventure.

All and all, I don’t think it will be that bad. It’s like anything – once you start doing it, you’ll get the hang of it and it’ll be fine. When I get nervous about things I tend to try to collect as much information as possible to calm myself down, but this is also a bit overwhelming because there are so many places you can go to learn more about cloth diapering.

Yesterday, on eBay, I purchased some brand new gDiapers. The baby can wear them with flushable liners inside or washable cloth inserts. Here’s what they look like:

Very cute, I think. I was able to purchase 5 different colors, so it should be fun coordinating them with different outfits. I am also interested in purchasing some all-in-one Fuzzi Bunz and Kushies, in addition to cloth inserts and regular diaper covers.

Hopefully this will be a worthwhile adventure. Of course, Shawn and I reserve the right to switch back to disposables if we find out cloth isn’t for us. We also will probably use disposables for car trips and such, but it would be nice to reduce our diaper bills and our ecological footprint a little bit.

PS - I just found this great site - Diaper Swappers! You can buy, sell, or trade gently used cloth diapers. Most are listed at more than half off the retail price.

We switched to cloth when our son was a baby, and have never looked back. It felt like a lot of work for the first few weeks, but now it's just part of our normal routine. We've even used them on vacation a couple of times.

The most helpful, unbiased information I found when researching cloth was a two-part series that starts here: http://moxie.blogs.com/askmoxie/2006/03/qa_cloth_diaper.html. And this bag makes going out really easy: http://www.happytushies.com/category_s/49.htm.

Can you tell you've hit on of my favorite topics?
